What ever happened to customer service?

Customer Service has been earmarked as a rapidly declining service to customers. It seems that the majority of society has become ignorant to social graces. What ever happened to "treat others as you would like to be treated"? The last thing a customer wants is to walk into a business and receive poor service. Many sales and customers are lost because of poor customer service.

The customer service employee is usually the the last person that a customer interacts with. Having trained employees is crucial to a successful business. Offering training upon hire should be a procedure for all companies. This training should include:

- answering the phone

- communicating with the customer

- handling complaints

- knowing when to call for help

- going beyond their duty

- provide service with a smile

Poor performance reflects the manager which in turn reflects the business. Companies cannot afford to lose business in this declining economy. Managers need to implement and follow through on policies and procedures for all employees in contact with the customer. Verbal warnings, written warnings, suspensions, and termination in that order should be used throughout employment. Companies want customers to come back. Customers do not want to do business where they feel unwanted, disrespected, or ignored.

There is still a high quality of customer service that should not be overlooked. Ask to speak to a manager. Voice complaints. If the manager does not resolve the problem get in contact with the main office. Large businesses have websites with a customer service link where you can anonymously leave your complaint. A company can only fix the problem if they are aware of the problem.

Then there are the customers who just can't be satisfied no matter what is offered. The old adage "The customer is always right" is not always correct. Being human, everyone has their bad day. An employee could have an exceptional customer service record and have a bad day. The nicest customer could be rubbed the wrong way and take it out on the next person, the customer service representative. Whichever way it is looked at, businesses depend on their customer service meeting the customer's needs.

Times are changing and the new generation is taking over. Jobs will become scarce as companies shut down. People need to take pride in thier position. There will always be another person waiting for a job. If they cannot provide the customer service that is expected of them than they should not be in that positon to begin with. The world needs to be more polite and eager to help the next person. Since customer service has such a huge impact on the society, why not keep the good ones on the frontline? Now more than ever jobs are going to be hard to come by, including customer service.
