Judging George Bush's performance as president

To the extent that one might judge at this moment, I would give him good marks. In the area of economics, unemployment is at all-time lows, earnings and incomes are up, and our economy is the envy of the world. Add to that, taxes have been reduced and revenues are up. I would give him a grade A+.

In the area of legislation, grid-lock with the democrats has hampered important needs regarding social security, health care, and a variety of other programs. Before the president is condemned on this point, I must remind everyone that the president only proposes legislation, congress must enact it. I give the president a grade B+ for his efforts, and find great fault with congress for failing to find ways to compromise and enact legislation that is badly needed.

Regarding the ever-present terrorist threat that has existed the duration of his two terms in office, I would grade the president with very good marks. We have been virtually attack free since 9/11. The problem with border security has developed over the past 20 years, and Congress refuses to address the illegal immigrant issue. In my book, congress flunks on this one, but the president grades out with a solid A.

Obviously, I have saved the hardest one for last, the military actions taken during President Bush's watch. As a country we were united in support of going after the terrorists on their own turf in Afghanistan. It was a good, and necessary action in my opinion. The decision to proceed into Iraq made a lot of sense based upon the intelligence collected worldwide, including the UK and Israeli espionage arms. When all information agrees to a perceived threat, both invasions seem to be prudent. I have to give the president a solid A for his ability and willingness to make that difficult decision.

History will be the ultimate judge of Bush's performance, but the jury cannot yet render a verdict. When all the vitriolic rhetoric is stripped away, our president has made decisions that have not made him popular, but upon serious contemplation seem to have been made based upon the best available information available at the time. I applaud him for the determination to defend our country and freedom in general. President Truman faced similar types of decisions sixty some years ago, and history seems to have judged him well, and I suspect the same may occur with the Bush era.
