President Barack Obama's State of the Union address last evening was almost painful to listen to, as he clearly attempted to avoid telling Congress what everyone knows that the nation is in a shambles as America
prepares for a possible war with Iran
and Pakistan.
And still, President Obama was obviously laying the groundwork for his second bid for the presidency, which he announced in 2010.
President Obama has seen most of his promises of change fail, with Washington insiders and special interest groups scuttling or co-opting almost every measure the President has proposed during his tenure.
"We are gravely disappointed in the performance of our President," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told reporters following the address. "He is not a shoe-in for the nomination." Obama is one of the few sitting Presidents who has had to face active opposition in the primaries in the last century.
The energy initiatives that President Obama put in place during his first year were one bright spot in his address. Obama reported that nearly one-third of the country's electrical generation capacity is now being generated through a combination of solar, wind, and geothermal plants under the bold package of interlocking research, financing and tax incentives in the Energize America Plan of 2009.
His attempts at removing troops from Iraq
in his first year in office in direct opposition to the advice of his Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton have proven disastrous. Many analysts suspect the Iranians viewed his peace initiatives as weakness, and stepped up their efforts at undermining the government of Iraq
immediately after the signing of the treaty.
Fears that Iran
will soon test its first nuclear weapon continue to rise, as leaked reports from the United Nations and Russia
indicate that the 2009 peace treaty was nothing more than a means to that end for the Islamo-fascist fundamentalist government. If successful, this would place nearly a quarter of a million US troops squarely between two nuclear powers hostile to the United States.
President Obama announced for the first time a call to reinstate the Selective Service draft lotteries, no longer able to ignore the shambles that the Bush administration made of the military and the National Guard, or the troops amassing along the east and west borders of Afghanistan
in the wake of the Iran-Pakistan Alliance.
In October, the National Governor's Conference unanimously voted to pull their troops home from abroad, in the wake of the prior spring's waves of natural disasters that struck several of the country's most populous states. The redeployment homeward started in November, just in time to help with the aftermath of Hurricane George, which nearly demolished New Orleans
for the second time since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Capping off the disappointments of the Obama administration have been the allegations of corruption amongst some of his top advisers and political allies. His replacement in the Senate, Emil Jones, was indicted in July for directing no-bid federal contracts to his son totaling several million dollars, and for accepting bribes from several former contributors to former governor Rod Blagojevich. Blagojevich is serving an eight year sentence for his 2010 conviction stemming from his bribes for jobs corruption scandal.
