2012 will give indications whether President Obama lived up to his promise but that promise most likely will not be fulfilled. It took decades for our economy and the world economy to collapse so it cannot be solved in four years. On the other hand, if the economy has improved, he is on the way. Getting more people employed an keeping their jobs is the key to our economy. In four years the question will be, are more people employed?
Peace will be the indicator of how successful the foreign policy has been. To think that there will be peace in the world is to be naive but being out of Iraq and Afghanistan must be achieved or it is just more of the same. If we are out of both wars and involved in others it will be also more of the same. Ending the present ones and avoiding any other wars in the next four years will be the test.
Veterans must be cared for in the best of ways. America owes them all they need including our respect, gratitude, and love. If there are homeless veterans and others suffering then our president has not done enough for them. If the suicide rates do not diminish radically then the administration has failed. If there are unemployed veterans who can work, then too it is a result of failure.
Respect for the law can be measured by lowering crime all over our country and making our streets safer. Will there be less prisoners? The extent that people feel safe in their homes and businesses as well as wherever they are is a crucial factor of a democracy and this has to improve.
Family life and education has to be better or the efforts are futile irregardless of the money put into it. The question will be, "How do your young people compare in the world?" If there is improvement, then we're on our way but if not it is a failure.
Abortion has been a dividing and will continue to be a dividing issue with Americans. President Obama has taken the most liberal view on it but will he go more to the center? He has also said that we can work towards lowering the need for abortions. However, if the number is the same or increased then the approaches are not working. Sex education, contraception, and abortion on demand have not worked in the past and may not work in the next four years. Young people and adults are becoming more an more irresponsible in their sexuality.
Freedom is what our country is about yet with freedom comes responsibility. Will Americans be more responsible and therefore be freer in four years?
President Elect Obama has brought us more together with his outstanding gifts of charisma and goodness. The clarity and practice of what it is to be an American has to be more concrete in four years.
