Here comes Peter Cottontail, hopping down the bunny trail, Hip pity, Hop pity, Easters on its way! I think every child's dream is to have a cute bunny for Easter. They are so cute and soft. They can be fun to play with, can live in your house, and are very inexpensive pets. Sounds too good to be true, right? Owning a rabbit is a big responsibility but choosing the best one for your family may be the hardest part. There are several things to consider when you are thinking of adding a new addition to your family. Housing requirements, general care, and of course what breed of rabbit.
Housing requirements are fairly simple to fulfill. You can purchase a cage at your local Wal-Mart, pet store, or feed store for about $40.00. Sometimes, your breeder (the person you purchase your rabbit from) will have cages for sale. You can get inside and outside cages of different sizes and styles. The ones you are likely to find at Wal-Mart or a pet store will need to be inside. They are usually made of plastic and will have drop pans or plastic bottoms. You will need to purchase shavings for bedding to put into these pans. Keeping your rabbit inside is fun and great but is a huge responsibility. You must clean the cage out daily and keep it in a well ventilated room. However, you can litter box train your rabbit, just like you would a cat! You also have to "bunny proof" your home. This is just like "baby proofing." Electrical wires, phone lines, poisons, food, and paper can harm your rabbit and must be put away properly. You also have the option of purchasing outdoor cages, from feed stores, rabbit suppliers, or the breeder. These work well if you have an enclosed area to protect your rabbit from the elements. They are usually made of all wire. However, you may find someone to build one that is wood and wire. There are several websites that have diagrams and plans to building custom wood and wire cages.
Next we will discuss general care of your rabbit. Rabbits are very smart creatures. They learn quickly and are loyal. They need continuous care. They require clean water daily, nutritious feed, and love. Your local pet stores, Wal-Mart, or feed store will carry water bottles designed especially for rabbits. They are usually $3 - $5 each. They come with special designed hangers that attach to your cages. Your supplier may also carry J' feeders or other rabbit feeders. However, you can also use a clean glass ash tray or bowl.
