Deciding if a degree in criminal justice is right for you

With any degree you work hard to achieve it is not just knowledge that you seek to attain. That knowledge translates into a viable career path you must envision immersing yourself in for years to come.

In making your decision you can begin by reading some job descriptions on any related websites: State Departments of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Department of Justice, FBI, forensics, FEMA and more. Several departments are currently recruiting bright, capable candidates. Although many police officers do not have a college degree some departments of correction are giving precedence to those who can not only pass the written and physical requirements but also have some college or military experience. California is one of those departments.

It is no secret that adult prisons are overcrowded. New prisons are scheduled to be built, thus requiring more employees. Departments are giving pay incentives to new employees, especially in less desirable geographical locations and also to Bi-Lingual candidates.

Criminal justice is no longer only a field for those who want to enter law enforcement. The 911 event of 2001 has increased our need for Homeland Security and Security Management. Juvenile justice is another focus. It is a specialized field that is not merely a scaled down version of prison. The subject of children's rights and confidentiality make working with juveniles a challenging career. These are some of the reasons WHY the field of criminal justice is a viable career.

Another part of the question of whether criminal justice is a good personal choice for a career is the question of WHO you are. With any career path there are certain qualities you must possess to find personal satisfaction and be an asset in your field. In the field of criminal justice you must possess a strong sense of ethics, both personal and professional. Most jobs entail contact with the community and with other professionals so communication skills are paramount. Police officers are public servants. To be a good officer one must have a sense of humility to serve the public. Common sense is another useful quality. Criminal justice professionals are faced with difficult decisions that often must be made in a split second. Learning discernment requires maturity, wisdom and experience.

If you are already a criminal justice professional it is still an excellent choice to further your education. There are many areas of specialization that welcome your hard-earned experience including advancement in law enforcement. Youth Correctional Counselor and Case Manager are a couple of jobs that require at least a Bachelor's degree. Probation is another such field.

Only you can decide if the field of criminal justice is right for you. Your personal attributes and desire to make a difference in a community are a perfect combination for success.
