There is a place for everything and everything has its place. It doesn't matter how beautiful your home or the elegant furnishing and beautiful, expensive wall hangings that decorate your home; it will look like a child's playhouse if it is cluttered with newspapers from two month ago and fast food wrapings that never made it to the kitchen trash. This happens because it is easier to leave it than to find a place to put it. Lets look at a few simple and easy steps which can be taken to utilize space for the things which have no place.
One of the biggest problems in a household is paper which comes in the mail. Stacks and stacks of business letters, unpaid bills, paid bills, important mortgage papers and the list goes on and on. If you want to know where they are when you need them, there must be orginazition. Decide on a particular area of the home for filing business papers, bills, letters, ect. Set up a filing system for important paper and receipts. This can be as simple as an accordian file or a file cabinet and can also double as an end table. Keep the mail in one location. Open and file mail once a week.
The laundry room, or in this case closet, is another area which can become troublesome if not kept neat and tidy. Laundry space is often limited. With a little bit of simple planning it will make wash days a more tolerable experience. For shelf space, a shelf can be added to stretch across the entire closet space. This is a good place for laundry detergent and simular items. A rod may also be hung from the bottom of the shelf to hang clothes from the dryer. Place baskets beside the washer for sorting clothes.
The bathroom is another area of the home, which if you have a very small one, will need a place to put things. A wicker basket on the bathroom wall for storing towels, tissue, soap and other incidentals is a suggestion. Use the shower rod for holding a back brush and net bag for bathtoys and wash clothes. Putting shelves beside the vanity is also a good idea.
Ones bedroom should always be inviting. This is where you go for resting and relaxing the brain. Of all places it should be free of clutter. If space is needed, you might try building a headboard storage unit for books, lamps, radios and such like. Store extra linens and blankets on the inside. Use flat roll out bins for under the bed. Build a plywood box for a foot stool, with a hinged cover. This can be used for magazines.
The kitchen, in most homes, is the focal point. Everyone gathers there, this is where the food is. Let organize it to make it more enjoyable. Try to have the refrigerator and stove close together to minamize steps. Keep counter tops free of clutter. This will give you more work area. Have a drawer near the stove for cooking utensils such as big spoons, turners, and spatules. Most stoves have a bottom drawer. Use this to store pot lids and baking pans. A cabinet over the stove is a great place to store spices and other condiments. This is an ideal place to have a lazy susan installed. Little plastic baskets under the sink is ideal for household cleaners and bug repellent. You can also add an apartment size freezer if there is a large family.
In the garage it is a simple matter of installing shelving for tools, nuts, bolts and the like. Use a metal garbage can for rakes, shovels and hoes. You can also attach hooks to the outside of the garbage can for hanging smaller tools. This also makes it easier for moving to whichever part of the yord your working in.
Put these ideas in use. You'll see how much easier life is when everything has a place and there is a place for everything.
