How to stay organized in school

Staying organized in school is essential to the learning and educational process. Not being able to find notes, assignments, and study materials can have a very negative effect upon the coursework that you submit and the quality of that coursework and subsequently your grade. Organization is not something that many parents are able to teach their children. This is because most adults are disorganized and "scattered", using this as an example it is little wonder that we are not all that great at instilling organizational skills in our offspring? As we all know, education begins at home. The tools and skills for educational success are likewise taught at home. If your child is older and you have not yet begun to teach these skills there is still hope.

Staying organized in school.

Get the proper tools for organization. You can get these easily at any office supply store. You will need post-it papers both small and regular sized. You will also need notebooks, and pocket folders of different colors and sizes for organizing everything by color code, a 3 hole punch so that you may punch any tests, handouts or copies and store them in a three ring binder. Also a stapler and paperclips (the stapler is for keeping the associated pages of notes or handouts together permanently so they are not separated. The paperclips are for marking sections in your textbooks since most students are not allowed to markup or write in their schoolbooks.). You will also find tabs and separator sheets very helpful, finally you will need a day planner.
Keep your tools with you when you are in class and when you are studying or doing homework. A pencil box is easy enough to carry around these items and to keep them organized.
Know and chart the expectations and assignments for each class. Usually a course schedule or syllabus is distributed by instructors on the first day of class. This is a document that tells you what assignments are due when, the required elements for those assignments, and their point value toward your total grade. When you get this document, go through it and note when each assignment is due on its appropriate date, this would go into the weekly calendar section of your planner.
Keep notes, all notes organized and together in either a spiral or bound notebook or a three ring tabbed binder. A three ring binder is more practical because then you can punch and insert any handouts into the binder with their corresponding notes.
Keep things neat and tidy. The reason that I say to buy post-it notes above is that you can stick them to the pages and write on them and then at the end of your course remove them and return the textbook undamaged. Then you mark the page with a paperclip. This keeps you from having to put the post-its so that they are hanging out of the book to mark the page. Doing that is a great way to loose your notes and their place. A well organized book bag, as well as a well organized desk or study area will really help you to stay organized with your work.
Color code everything so that it is easier to find. Use one color folder and notebook as well as corresponding tabs for one class and another color for another class. This way it makes it easier to find your materials quickly and easily even when they are in your bag, or scattered across your bed.
