There are a few things to highly consider when choosing the right breed of dog for you and your household. The lifestyles we choose and the particular obstacles we live with are huge factors in selecting the right sort of pet. It is essential, not only for yourself but for the well being of an animal that you choose wisely.
Make sure you pick a dog that will fit in nicely with your household, literally. If you are living in an apartment the size of an extended closet you need to consider your options with smaller breeds that are less active. This does not exclude you from walking your dog however, but it does ease the potential for disaster where an energetic dog with high activity levels might wreak havoc on your tiny living quarters. Big dogs need space too. And plenty of it. Not only for roaming, and everyday living, but for exercise and play times indoors. An apartment life might not be the best for a large breed, because the lack of backyard is a huge problem. Pups need their space just as you need your space.
If you have other pets you need to be well aware of a dog's habits. Some get along fine with other household animals, while some might take great joy in chasing around the cat, or batting at the goldfish bowl. It's necessary to look into the breed of dog and their playful tendencies or aggressive behavior traits. Take time to consider the size of your potential new dog too. A large dog starts out small and playing with your other animals, but they will grow bigger and more rowdy, and where once they played with your other animals as a puppy they can now cause serious injury playing as a full grown adult dog. Always look into the future.
Consider your neighbors in this grand scheme equation, even if you aren't necessarily the best of friends or the most bonded of street buddies. Dogs are loud. They bark and skitter across the floors, and chase things in your backyard. It is even wise to talk to your neighbor before obtaining certain breeds. Especially if they are larger. People can be frightened of bigger breeds especially, and you should see about socializing them with close by residents often. Assure your neighbor of your ability to train your puppy, and also assure your neighbor that you seriously take their safety to heart. Also, apartment dwellers, living above somebody while owning a dog is something to keep in mind. Dog nails are noisy.
A dog is a joy to have in any home, if you are willing to consider all of the possible problems. That way you can dwindle the list down and find the right sort of breed for you. Keep a budget in mind, find a possible breed that won't hinder your daily life or theirs, or the people living immediately nearby, and it will work out.
