The word aromatherapy refers to a special kind of massage therapy in which aromatic essentials oils are used. The oils themselves have various properties and are selected to assist with various conditions. For example, peppermint essential oil may be used for stomach problems, while lavender may be used for relaxation therapy.
The combinations of oils used in this therapy are carefully selected by the aromatherapist so that they are suitable for the condition and for the patient. It is very important that the person receiving the therapy massage likes the aroma of the oils being used, because this is part of the process.
Aromatherapy has been around since the days of the Babylonians and Ancient Egyptians. Oils were extracted from plant stems, roots and flowers, in much the same way as they are today. The main difference is that today's essential are extracted by compression using machinery.
Massage is not the only way to deliver the benefits of the essential oils used in aromatherapy to the body. Oils can penetrate the skin when used in a warm bath, or they can be inhaled, but aromatherapy massage seems to offer the most relaxing and enjoyable solution to many problems. There is s soothing element in being touched and pampered during the treatment.

Note the contra-indications and ask the person you are treating if they have any existing health problems. Consider these in the light of your knowledge' about the essential oils you have chosen.
Once you have selected which oils you prefer, consult your patient. It may be that you have chosen essential oils that your patient doesn't like. This won't help the treatment. Take the selected oils and decide how you want to blend the fragrances. Next you need carrier oil which is used to dilute and disperse the massage oil. Choose almond oil, wheat germ, rapeseed oil, peach
