Tasmania.

Arriving on one of the large and modern trans Bass Strait ferries from Melbourne or landing on a plane at Launceston or Hobart, you are now on what is termed the 'Apple Isle', and it is uniquely different as a tourist destination. Aussies from the mainland usually appreciate the much slower pace of life in this sixth state of Australia. The fact that it is an island is responsible for this, and because it is so far south the summer temperatures are bearable, but winters are cold.

Many thousands of years ago during the ice age, the glaciers carved out what we see today as spectacular rugged coastlines and mountains. If you arrive by boat, Devonport will be your point of embarkation, and if you like nice beaches travel from here to Greens Beach and stay awhile.

If you are in a hiking mood, you must traverse the Cradle Mountain, Lake St Clair, National Park walk. You need to travel in a south westerly direction from Devonport, about 60 kilometres to Cradle Mountain Lodge, and the guide will prepare you for your trek through to Lake St Clair; a distance of approx another 60 km of walking. The walk continues on through almost tundra type growth rather like the topography of Scotland until you come to the shores of Lake St Clair.

Here you enter a total contrast to what has basically been alpine vegetation, for you enter the remnants of a tropical rainforest. All of the characteristics are there, with ferns and tree roots overgrowing the walking path. To make this wonderland even more picturesque, you are right beside the blue waters of the Lake, and Mount Ossa is on the other side, a rocky uplift equally picture book perfect; moments and images you'll never forget. Just a word of warning: be prepared for winter weather even in the middle of summer; take some warm clothing. People have been trapped, and even some fatally. When you finally arrive at the settlement at Lake St Clair, you will find basic acommodations in which to
