Poetry: Elephants

by Carol Gioia

Created on: November 16, 2008   Last Updated: September 13, 2011

Elephants are happy pachyderms,
waving their trunks in the air.
But, when they roll their trunks up,
proceed with caution and care.

You and I were happy once,
reaching for the skies.
Then gloom set in, when you began
to feed me all those lies.

Now, when we are together,
my heart is quite entombed.
Each time you speak, I am convinced
there's an elephant in the room.

When you profess undying love,
lamenting your regret.
how can I forgive, when well I know,
some elephants I won't forget.
