When my husband and I moved from Iowa to our Texas four years ago, the one thing I knew I would miss more than anything else was the ability to have a large garden. Not long after we arrived in Texas, I saw an advertisement for the AeroGarden. I decided to check it out so that I could learn about the technology. I was soon convinced that I wanted one, but I knew we could not afford it.
I learned that what distinguishes AeroGarden from other hydroponic systems is that it uses hydroponic and aeroponic technology. The hydroponic technology is quite simple: you grow plants in water without any dirt or chemicals. In order to do this, there must be a reservoir and a place where the pods that hold the seeds can be placed, suspending it in the water. What AeroGarden does that is different is suspends the pods above the water. The pump that is built into the platform that houses the pods pumps water in a waterfall like manner onto the root system of the plants you grow. The seedpods are placed in holes that hold the pods in suspension over the water. A little rivet built below each the hole for each pod allows the water to flow over the sponge that holds the seeds. The seeds are started with a cover over them, keeping the moisture in and allowing air to get to them from the bottom. This technology speeds the germination process and encourages faster growth. The presence of oxygen also minimizes the development of algae.
For two years, I kept wishing I could get an AeroGarden. Sometime a year ago last summer, my sister asked me if I had ever heard of AeroGarden. I could not imagine why she was asking me, but I told her of course I had heard of it, and I had been researching the technology and I thought it was amazing. I did not realize it at the time, but she was trying to gauge my interest because she was planning to suggest to my mom that she consider giving me an AeroGarden for my birthday. I had no idea what she was planning or what my mom was doing until October a year ago when I received a card from my mom informing me that my birthday present was the AeroGarden.
I have had the classic model for just over a year. I adore it. The lettuce I grew in it was the best tasting lettuce I have ever eaten. One of the things I hate most about lettuce that I grow in the ground or that I purchase in the grocery store is that there is always dirt all over it. Unless you buy the prepackaged stuff that is washed before packaging, you have to be vigilant about inspecting each leaf
