Going in for a prostate ultrasound can be scary. So it helps to know what you're walking into. The first thing you should know is that prostate ultrasounds are painless and noninvasive procedures. They are a tool your doctor may use to help diagnose potential problems with your prostate.

A prostate ultrasound is a medical test that uses high frequency waves that go through your prostate. The sound waves generate echoes that reflect from the inside of your body to make a reflection. And these reflections produce an outline of your prostate. Through this process, the ultrasound captures a picture of your prostate.

Prostate ultrasounds are most commonly used when there is an abnormality found such as a lump or prostate enlargement. Other reasons may be finding prostate disorders, the causes of problems with urination and male infertility. The procedure is also used to identify prostate cancer. The ultrasound also allows doctors to get perform biopsies, in which they take a tissue sample of the abnormal area for further testing.

Whatever the reasons for an ultrasound of the prostate, the main purpose of this diagnostic test is to detect possible disorders or malformations. Once the problem is identified, your doctor can evaluate and determine the proper diagnosis. Then you and your doctor can figure out the best treatment for you. Remember, you can't fix the problem if you don't know what it is.

The elephant in the room is the most worrisome aspect of the prostate ultrasound. Prostate ultrasounds usually require a probe to be inserted into the rectum. Yeah, bummer. This may not sound like a walk in the park, but don't be discouraged because of this.

Getting a prostate ultrasound can save your life. For the price of a little discomfort for a short period of time, the answer seems clear if you're wondering whether or not to go through with it. This procedure gives your doctor a much better understanding about what your prognosis is, if any. The picture that the ultrasound provides is vital information that allows your doctor to determine how to best serve you.
