Why you can't change what you don't admit

Working in the field and politics, I have learned that if you do not admit you have a problem, you will not be able to change it. Admitting that you have a problem is the first step towards solving them. The first step starts with you. It begins with you and it ends with you. That is the simple explanation of it all. The only person that can change is you.

Nobody can change you.

If you have a gambling problem, you cannot change it if you do not admit it. If you are not going to admit it, you are not going to take action. Others can see that you have a gambling addiction.
However, you have to make the first move and step forward and admit you have a gambling addiction.

If you have a drug addiction, you will not be able to change that. You will have to admit that you have a drug problem before you can change anything. Like a gambling problem, you would have to step forward and admit that you have a drug problem.

This is no different for shopoholics, alcoholics, sexoholics, and every other type of addiction.

The reason that most people don't admit that they have problems fall under generally two reasons: the person does not admit that s/he has the problem or the person is too ashamed to step forward and admit the problem. This is something very common at best.

Either way, such problems linger. These problems will get fester and become worse. Again, only those people can change themselves with a bit of encouragement and support.

Back to the reasons to why such people will not admit their problems. The ones that perceive that nothing is wrong with them tend to give off an arrogant aura. They could be extremely stubborn and unwilling to change. Perhaps they are against change at best. In response, they rebel.

Since they will not admit there is a thing or two wrong with them, they will not be able to change. Getting them to admit their problems is no cake walk.
If they do not admit they do have problems, they are not going to change. In turn, they will continue to cause problems for other people around them.

It is the same thing with those that are too ashamed. However, they need a lot of talking to and support. They may feel ashamed or too humiliated to step forward and admit they have a problem. Still, they will not be able to change if they do not admit their faults and flaws.

By not admitting such problems, those people are just leaving it there to fester. It is like leaving a piece of bread out of the open.
By leaving it alone, it will get all moldy. When that happens, it needs to be thrown out.

Perhaps the person may insist that the bread is still good and just leave it there. As a result, the mold starts to grow and expand.
Those problems that those will not admit will continue to fester and become far worse.

This can be compared to the housing and credit crisis in the
United States. These are problems that need to be solved. In short, changes of the economy need to be made. However, it would be up to the politicians to admit that we have a problem. If they did not admit that they have a problem, then things will not get done and things will not get changed.

Overall, change starts with you. To take the first step, you must admit that there is something wrong with you. Once you do that, you can assess the situation.
You can assess what had caused those problems.

From there, you can assess what steps to take to solve those problems.
