Hunting for squirrels is a great start for the beginner hunter. Squirrels are classified as being one of the easiest small game to hunt for besides rabbits. The reason why I say this is because squirrels are mostly active and noisey throughout the day. Even on a windy day, it could be possible to hear a squirrel call out. On a calm day; squirrels can be easily found in trees or on the ground. Squirrel hunting can be a fun sport that is enjoyed by all age groups as well.
The sounds a squirrel can make, either up in a tree, or on the ground, is very distinctive when being compared to a turkey or deer. When a turkey moves, it will sound like a hop or taking one step before shuffling the leaves for food. Deer, on the other hand, will take slower four-legged strides when moving. Squirrels tend to always sound like they are shuffling through the leaves when they are not eating. Squirrels enjoy eating dried corn, acorns, bird seed, and just about any type of nut. Pine cones are also included in their diet and is considered a favorite amongst the "Red Squirrel."
The best weapon used in squirrel hunting is a 410 gauge shotgun. It possess a light weight, easy accuracy, and no kick when firing. The kick of a 410 gauge shotgun is practically nothing and resembles the .22 caliber rifle when the trigger is pulled. Both has no kick and the 410 is recommended for shooting squirrel. There is no need to aim perfectly when using a 410 gauge shotgun cause the pellets will scatter out giving you a perfect kill. This type of gun is recommended for the beginning hunter for these particular reasons.
Squirrel can be found at all times during daylight hours. Signs of their nest being present is a good sign. It's also wise to scout out their eating locations. They usually tend to leave their nest in early hours of the morning in search for food and return in evening hours with their own collection. Once you find their feeding grounds, you will notice them traveling in a set routine pattern everyday.
There are two different ways of hunting squirrels. One way is the steady walk method, and the other is still hunting. Either way you choose, both methods are very productive once you have observed your surroundings.
When using the steady walk walk technique, don't walk fast. Take a few short steps, stop, listen, then move on. The best time to move in for a closer shot is when they are busy eating. If the squirrel happens to see you, don't move. Resume still until the squirrel starts to eat again.
Still hunting is a great way to hunt if you have scoped out their territory that involves their nest, eating locations, schedule, and the direction of movement they take. Just find you a place with some cover, sit still, and wait. You will be able to hear a squirrel coming from a good distance when still hunting. Sometimes squirrel callers will work. Some people are known to be capable of making their own squirrel noises without a caller.
