Tropical Cruises: Planning know-how

Unless you are going into the jungle or wading in swamps, you probably won't encounter too many bugs to worry about.

If you hope to shop, most and maybe all ports visited will accept US currency at the current exchange rate, for example: Belize-one US=two Belize, Mexico-one US=10 Pesos, etc. It's not hard to find out the rate and many places post their price in US dollars. You can usually negotiate but not always.

Try to pack about 1 1/2 outfits per day unless you don't mind wearing dirty clothes. On a five day cruise you will need one nice outfit for formal night although most ships now do not require gowns and jackets. Check your ticket packet to be sure. (your ticket will come in a booklet that is very informative) The cruise line will usually document this in their materials.

If you can be flexible in your departure date, shop for cruises within 30-60 days of leaving for the best bargains. I recommend that you get a passport. In fact, it almost always required for any travel out of the country now. This takes about 1 to 3 months unless you want to pay double for fast service. They are good for 10 years for adults and 5 years for children. You will find passports are even good for ID's in the states.

Get some comfortable shoes. You will stand and walk a lot. I have cruised on four different lines. They each have strengths and weaknesses, but overall, they are all good. I have several friends who have gone on lines that I have not. Their take is the same. My experience is on Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, and Costa.
