Poetry: Puzzles

by Derrick Alfonse

Gateway Girl

Mary, Mary, you are contrary

I can see why men love you so,

I do understand the thrill you give

But I also happen to know

That you are a trickster, yes you are,

Showing them things that are really not there,

Making them think they are invincible

While acting like you really care.

You may have some good somewhere inside

But you're just not right for some guys,

Because some of the things you make them believe

Are nothing but bold-faced lies.

I guess you must be good for them that love you,

You have them coming back for more,

And those that ask too much of you

Unfortunately, they are doomed for sure.

You pass them on to that friend of yours,

That temptress dressed all in white,

And once she gets her hooks in them

It's bye, bye baby, good-night.

Now what she does is cruel and inhumane,

No way to treat a lover,

She never appreciates the love they give

Although to them, there's no one above her.

If a time should come when I had to chose

Mary Jane, you'd be my girl,

'Cause though you're never dressed in white

Compared to Miss C, you're a pearl.

I hope that day it never comes

I've seen the harm she's done,

All, it seems, she ultimately does

Is cause pain and death for everyone.

Of course your pimp, your pusher, your pal

Always get richer as time goes by,

While our kids, our future, the ones who matter,

Foolishly, they all die.

I know you're not all that's bad with this world

As I'm sure there's a lot that's worse,

But I think you should agree we have to start somewhere

So let's start with you, our curse.

Don't feel bad, it's not all on you,

We wish to get rid of you all,

With the hope that our kids will have a chance

And that they will neither stumble nor fall.

I wish I could say I wish you the best

But you know that just wouldn't be true,

Because if I had to point out where our problems begun

You know I'd have to start with you.
