How to know if a business degree is the right choice for you

You want to make more money. So, you decided to get a business degree, since in your mind "money" is associated with "business". You are not alone; this association is established in minds of many others. But, is a business degree the right choice for you? Here are the factors to consider, before you submit your papers to Bachelor of Business program:

Did you like math? Are you good with numbers? Unless you want to specialize in Human Resources, Organization Behavior or Marketing, business degree means spending most of your time crunching and analyzing numbers. Doesn't sound interesting? You may as well stop before you spend more time and money.

You are not crazy about numbers, but you like to work with people. The human aspects of the business degree could be a good fit for you. However, you need to have excellent communication skills, verbal and written - the real skills, not the "outstanding communication skills" from your resume. If you are considering this path, take into account the following:

Even if you don't specialize in accounting or finance, you will nevertheless have to take the mandatory accounting, statistics and finance courses;
Some marketing jobs require an extensive use of statistical methods;
Normally, remuneration level for marketing /HR professionals is lower than for accounting /finance professionals.
Bachelor degree in psychology, potentially combined with MBA in the future, is the other way of getting into these fields.

Read the business section of your newspaper. Were you curious to learn more? Did you want to know, why the increased interest rate is supposed to reduce inflation or what is the difference between Japanese and American way of manufacturing process? What is "call option"? If you want to learn more, the business career could be right for you. If you felt asleep, stop right here.

Think about your goal. Do you want a career in a corporation or owning your business? To be a successful entrepreneur you do not need a business degree. If your goal is to start your own business, business degree may help you to get there. Or it may not. Remember, you can not learn to be an entrepreneur; you have to be born one.

Don't confuse business degree with management. Business degree is not a prerequisite for becoming manager. The best managers have professional degree and experience in their chosen field (engineering, medical, even Arts), and MBA or management courses later. Some companies would pay for MBA for their employees.

Before making a decision, talk to the people who work in your chosen field and ask them, what they are doing on daily basis. Will you enjoy doing these tasks 9-5, 9-7 or even 9-9? If yes, you can submit your application.
