Short stories: A narrow escape

by Nancy Cogar

Created on: November 14, 2008

She entered the bar. Immediately all heads jerked and turned towards the squeaking of the old heavy door. All eyes curious of the stranger entering watched as the woman walked slowly across the bar. The loud music and smoke filled bar with the sound of clinking of glasses and low voices and laughter stopped. Time seemed still as the woman slowly dropped down on one of the bar stools. She spoke quietly to the bartender who nervously took her order, bumping, knocking and clanging glasses together spilling half empty drinks as he gazed into beautiful eyes . He looked apologetically with a half smile as embarrassment began to redden his face. She was a beauty and every eye within distance watched her every move. Music continued to play in the distance, but no one noticed, their eyes pry-ed waiting for some acknowledgment from the stranger who captivated the room. The woman slowly raised her glass to shimmering lips, sipping at her drink as if knowing secretly the room belonged to her. Long red curly hair she brushed away from her beautiful face with a knowing smile as her eyes explored the room.

A lone man sat in the corner reading, the only person in the room unaffected from the allure of the stranger. Her eyes found him in the dark corner and her smile faded into a curious gaze. The room seemed hypnotized following her as she slowly walked across the room. Secretly each desired her acknowledgement and their eyes pry-ed after her, but no one spoke, nor had the ability too. All seemed frozen, as if time had truly stopped. The bartender continued to pour drinks with conscious effort, trying to break out of the woman's hypnotic grip. She slowly approached the man sitting in the corner, who brushed aside his paper and smiled inviting her to sit. The room snapped as if released from her control as she sat down with the man who was unaffected by her beauty. Low voices began to whisper and the clanging of glasses and laughter once again filled the bar.

The woman ordered drinks for each and smiled across the table at the man who had captured her attention. What was so different about this man that her beauty could not captivate? She did not know. Her interest in him intensified with each word and gesture, until she thought she would lose her mind. The last drinks were ordered and she decided to make her move on the man before she totally lost her power for his attention. She needed him, She did not know why. At the right moment, or so she thought, she reached under the table and gripped clawing at his leg, grasping his knee, thigh area. He stood suddenly knocking over their drinks in the process. Gazing down at her sitting at the table his piercing blue eyes boring through her. Suddenly he slapped her across the face. " I want to be respected" She heard him say. Picking up his belonging, he said goodbye and strode across the room and out the door. Leaving her to sit alone.
