The aromas of the upcoming holiday season are approaching us quickly. With all the delightful smells of cinnamon spice, honeyed ham, fresh baked breads and desserts, no wonder it is so difficult to maintain your waistline. Depending on your geographical area, weather can also play a culprit in bringing about the holiday bulge.
This year, though, make an effort to avoid the common mishaps of holiday indulgences by simply following these simple tips and suggestions.
When preparing foods, go light on certain ingredients. Cheeses, fatty meats, nuts, butter, cream sauces, gravies, whipped cream and oils can increase the pant or dress size. Of course, you might be asking yourself how someone can possibly reduce, or eliminate, the use of butter or oil when creating an edible masterpiece, but it is important to look into healthily alternatives. Also, just by simply reducing the amount can make a big difference without sacrificing taste.
One trick that has been handed down to me is the act of chewing gum. It might sound silly, but it works. It has been stated that chewing gum reduces stress. So, if you're cooking for a large group, a nagging mother-in-law, or a finicky eater this will have dual benefits.
Never skip meals prior to a holiday feast; this will only lead to an unhealthy binge. Your body should remain on its normal eating schedule to prevent bloating, lethargy, and other more serious health issues.
Drink lots of water, especially while cooking, since you can dehydrate fairly easily standing over a hot stove. Also, alternate between the Eggnog, festive punch and other delectable beverages that are available. It's helpful to drink one glass of water before a meal to trick the body into feeling full. Eat slowly and drink plenty of liquids during your meal.
After the holiday feast, take the dogs out for a neighborhood romp. This will help rev your energy, and burn off theirs. While you're at it, invite the whole family, or at least those who didn't over do it and are now taking a nap.
Keep busy during the holidays by shoveling snow or raking leaves. Not only will your guest appreciate a cleared pathway, but your body will thank you too.
Above all else, enjoy the time you have with family. By becoming familiar with what they have done in the last year to what they have planned for the new one, you will prove yourself as a wonderful host and maybe, just maybe, they will indulge you in their will.
