How to organize your household

by Daniel J. Gansle

Unless you have the time and energy to keep your house clean and spotless 100 percent of the time, organization can be a challenge. From cluttered closets to overstuffed pantries to shoes and clothes scattered everywhere, organizing your stuff just isn't how most people want to spend their precious few moments of free time.

Today, we'll take a look at the Top 10 tips on how you can organize your household quickly and easily.

10) Wall-Hanging Shelving Units and Bookshelves. Purchase wall-hanging shelving units to display knick-knacks and picture frames. Also have lots of bookshelves in your home. Tip: bookshelves with drawers or doors you can pull open to reveal extra shelving space are a good organizational bet.

9) Reduce Knick-Knacks and Clutter. It's no secret we all love our stuff. From vases to Hummel collectibles to baskets, DVDs, books, ceramic figurines, photo frames, and other sundry knick-knacks, too many objects in a room make it appear cluttered and small. Go through all your knick-knacks and see if there's any you can give away or transfer into another room. If you must keep them, arrange them on shelves or displayed in a curio cabinet. You can even store knick-knacks in plastic boxes and rotate them according to season.

8) Wall Hangers/Hooks. I have several plastic wall hangers/hooks on my walls I purchased years ago. It is a small hook with a sticky backing you simply press onto the wall to mount. I use these handy hooks to hang fly swatters, brooms, umbrellas, plastic baggies, barbeque equipment, and much more. You can also purchase larger metal hooks, but these require drilling and placement of wall anchors. Other hook types include over-the-door hooks, decorative hooks, and bathroom towel hooks.

7) Purse Rack. For you ladies who enjoy cute purses that match your glamourous evening wear, an over-the-door purse rack helps organizes those essential carriers of money and makeup.

6) Shoe Rack. Shoe racks come in all shapes and sizes these days. You can purchase a floor-standing rack, wall-mounted rack, door-hanging rack, or a plastic or canvas pocket rack. If you have a larger collection of shoes, these come in handy.

5) Laundry Sorter Cart. Do you spend hours each week sorting your laundry between darks and lights? Purchase a laundry sorter cart that sports three deep canvas bags on its metal frame and you'll have the sorting already done while you wheel your clothes directly to the washer.

4) Storage Ottomans and Benches. Want to conceal toys and other household items inside a piece of furniture? Ottomans and benches with lift-up seats reveal an innovative and convenient way to store your extra stuff.

3) Cart With Drawers. These are particularly handy for just about anything; plus they have wheels for easy transport all around the house. You can purchase one of these made out of plastic or fabric with a metal frame. You'll use them in the office, garage, basement, craft room, play room, kids room, or anywhere else in the home and wheel them around to where you're working.

2) Space Bags. Place your off-season clothing into these handy plastic bags, seal the bag, and watch it shrink into a rock-hard slab as you suck the air out of it with your vacuum cleaner. Store these bags in attics, closets, basements, garages, or anywhere else in your home. The bags are resistant to mold, dirt, and dust, so your clothes will be perfectly preserved. Tip: you can also use Space Bags to store dining room tablecloths, napkins, runners, blankets, pillows, and placemats.

1) Rectangular Rubbermaid Plastic Boxes. If you watch those PBS home improvement shows on Saturday morning, they swear by these things. And it's true; these handy plastic boxes hold a variety of things including clothing, shoes, tools, paints, art and office supplies, sports equipment, and more. Slide boxes under beds, stack in closets, or place in garage, attic, or basement.

Organizing your household doesn't have to be difficult or overly time-consuming. With the right organizational approach, you'll be glad you took the time to make your home a little less cluttered.
