Exercise Outdoors, Even in Winter
For those of us in cooler climates, the snow and icy rains are on their way. But don't even think about taking your routine indoors yet - fall and winter can be some of the best months to get in shape, clear your mind and awaken your senses.
Some Motivation London's Telegraph Newspaper recently reported that even the lightest of exercise is better for you when conducted outdoors. Studies show that negative ions in fresh air increase alertness and elevate your mood. Outdoor exercise burns more calories than the same activities in the gym - up to 50% more calories are burned just keeping warm. Jogging around a park is an excellent choice because changes in incline and stride length combined with twisting and turning movements on different inclines tones up a greater number of muscle groups than using a treadmill.
Psychologically, all exercise produces an overall sense of well-being, often relieving depression, anxiety, and stress by producing endorphins, the body's natural tranquilizer. Being outdoors compounds this effect.
Not convinced yet? Don't forget that exercising outside provides new and changing scenery. Ever been stuck with a less than pleasurable view of a fellow gym member while minding your own business on the leg extension machine? What about those really challenging days when you're spinning your little heart out and wondering why this same workout looks effortless to everyone but you? The air is hot and stuffy (not all gyms remember to keep the AC blasting past September), the odors are pungent and the person using the machine next to you just can't seem to talk lower.
You begin negotiating with yourself the different ways to lessen this torture while still keeping in shape. Maybe you'll go to the gym once per week instead of 3 times per week, making up lost days by staying longer when you finally do work out. Maybe there's another gym that's less hot, costs less, is bigger, friendlier, more visually appealing or has a better juice bar.
Negotiate no more - take your routine outside and all of these nuisances will vaporize into the thin, brisk air.
There's Lots To Do Outside Outdoor exercise can encompass many activities. Running and jogging are popular favorites, but as the winter progresses, you'll need waterproof sneakers with excellent traction. Consider investing in a pair of Yak-Trax, lightweight rubber and metal traction devices that slip under your running shoe. They're especially helpful if you encounter black
