Undoubtedly the world we live in is a very stressful place, with our jobs, lifestyle and environment often combining to become a veritable hotbed of stress potential. Deadlines to meet, family priorities, lack of sleep and a stressful work environment ... all these things build up to stress overload! How to eliminate stress from our lives becomes a question that each one of us needs to address at some point.
When we live in a state of constant stress, many symptoms soon start to manifest. Exhaustion, agitation, poor concentration, fatigue, headaches, decreased libido, loss of appetite, gastric problems and high blood pressure are all common symptoms of stress overload. With our busy lifestyles, we are not allowing our bodies the chance to relax and change pace. Our lives are rapidly spiraling out of control. Unless we are alerted by the initial warning signals, the consequences may be serious.
How do we start to eliminate stress from our lives? Somehow we need to break the cycle of busy-ness and stress-inducing behavior. Fortunately there are some natural remedies that can provide us with a kick start'. Learned relaxation techniques; a healthy, balanced diet, and a supportive network of family and friends are all important. However, possibly the most surprising stress reduction aid is exercise. There are good reasons for this.
Firstly, exercise helps to release built-up tension, both physical and emotional. It releases into the body a number of hormones such as the endorphins that are responsible for promoting a sense of well-being, thus lessening feelings of stress. In addition, some forms of exercise include the opportunity for socialization, which can be a great stress reducer.
Usually a varied exercise regime is more interesting. Pursue activities that are exciting, challenging, and satisfying. Here are some suggestions:
Sign up for aerobics classes at a gym, or get advice on starting your own program to fit around your work schedule, family commitments and other activities. For example, brisk walking is an excellent aerobic exercise that is free and available to nearly anyone. Even short brisk walks can relieve bouts of stress. Choose interesting and varied routes, and perhaps get a friend to go with you.
Swimming is an ideal exercise for those who are stressed. In addition, it is a low impact exercise particularly suitable for pregnant women, individuals with musculoskeletal problems, and those who suffer from exercise-induced asthma.
