Short stories: Lunch

"Do you really think they're real?" Jessica asked as she nibbled a potato chip while staring into space.

The other women around the table exchanged looks then stared at her, brows furrowed. "What are you talking about?" Kelly asked before stabbing at her salad.

"You know," Jessica said lowering her voice. "That there are some women that get.... multiple...."

"I hardly think this is the place for such a discussion, Jessica," Patty admonished. "We may be at lunch but this is still a work place full of men with big ears."

"You actually think they'd waste their time listening to girl talk?" Kelly asked waving a dismissive hand.

"I know they do especially about stuff like this," Patty insisted.

As if to negate this John chose now to shout out in derisive laughter, "You have got to be kidding! Brett Farve is not gay!"

"You're gonna have to prove it to us, John," George said grinning.

"Yeah, you should ask him out," Jason added almost doubled up in mirth.

"Maybe I will," John replied. He glared at them and took a vicious bite out of his sandwich.

"They're not even listening to us. They're talking stupid sports like always,"Jessica countered.

Unconvinced Patty looked behind her to the "Guy" table and heard Jason chime in with, "I don't know. I say Patrick Ewing, he's awesome."

Patty frowned and turned back to the ladies. "I thought they were talking football. Isn't Patrick Ewing basketball?"

Jessica rolled her eyes and the others shrugged. "Who cares? At least they're not listening to us. So, what about it? Do you think...."

"Well, I don't know about anybody else but I do," Mallory said unabashed.

"You mean you get...." Kelly gasped.

Jessica gaped unblinkingly, her sandwich suspended midway to her opened mouth. "Really? How many?" she asked all wide eyed wonder.

Mallory laughed. "Do you want a blow by blow account or just directions on how to get them?"she asked .

"My ex-husband could have use instructions," Patty muttered, a bitter twist to her mouth. The others laughed. "Shush! The guys will hear."

They all looked back to the men in time to hear Tim say, "My money's on Jose Reyes. He's phenomenal."

Mallory made a funny face as she turned back to the girls. "That is weird. Now they're on baseball. What the heck is that about?"

"Oh, who cares about them?" Jessica shouted impatiently. "So, tell us, Mallory, how you... how... tell us something!"

"I didn't always get them. As a matter of fact I never got "extras" until...recently," she said evasively.
