may not realize are "soft" and which are more pourous and crack easier than others. Travertines, tumbled marbles, and cheaper thin ceramic tiles can be cracked if large weights are dropped on them. Also depending on the subflooring and levelness of the floor the size of the tile can be too large and not the density required - such as an 18"x18" and only 1/2 inch thick as opposed to 3/4 inch thick it may crack if it's not the strongest of materials.
As for Aesthetic impact and longevity of the appeal of the tiles chosen; Granites, marbles, and exotic glass are great for high end glamorous spaces. Iridescent glass tiles are lovely in small less travelled areas. The latest in metallic tiles and exotic stone can increase the scale, impact of the entire room. Buying the best within ones budget will achieve the most satisfaction long term. If this home is to be owned for the long term the choice should certainly reflect the most consistent elements of the persons taste. It's a sad thing to see a recently installed floor be removed and remodelled when a more careful choice could have lasted a lifetime. Advice, choose slowly and with all the factors above considered. Flooring is a huge percentage of the interior of a space, therefore it should be most appealing and versatile.
