Thanksgiving in the Heart ~

When moments of gratitude spring from the heart,

It usually means that thanksgiving will start:

For a snug little house and a porch with a view,

Toward the orchard and pond and rolling fields, too,

For trees like our sycamores, poplars and oaks,

All stylishly-dressed in their autumn-bright cloaks,

For crisp autumn apples, for Indian corn,

For the glitter-dew frost that flirts with the morn,

For fat lazy pumpkins and gourds on the vine,

For scampering squirrels and the acorns they find,

For the long-legged fawn by the back porch one day:

Our gazes locked briefly, then he dashed away!

For the golden fur coat that now covers my feet:

It belongs to my dog who is loyal and sweet,

For tree silhouettes against orange harvest moon,

For evenings that settle around us too soon,

For good books to read by the blaze of a fire,

For songs that we hear and the thoughts they inspire,

For all of these comforts, we thank God above,

And last, but not least, for the folks that we love!

We cherish these blessings and savor their part,

In thanksgiving memories held in the heart.
