Luckily, I happen to have watched my brilliant husband and learn all about this very topic. I would think of this information as the FYI of business education and the real opportunities available. First thing one might want to do is to go to a school at the tier or level of the type of company with which they aspire to work. It is so important to obtain the most precise path and dream and then get the reality information on what it truly takes to attain that path. If it's to make a six figure salary, then there are some very good things one can do to launch towards this goal and achieve it.
Select a university that is well known enough to be scouted by the level of company you are planning to work for. Once you figure what your financial options are for college then the next step is getting the best major combined with the best grades you can achieve. If you go with an Information Systems, Project Management, or some IT concentrated business degree, then you will be in a great area which will result in a decent first job. Industry specializations can help you find a niche you are most suited to and with which you can carve out a long term experience repitoir to work from. If you go into the healthcare industry, and focus on mid-level implementations of Lawson or other applications which will give you a specific skill set. With more variety of job experiences you may be able to have a broad range of skills and specific knowledge with which you can market.
Next is after you have gone into the workforce and worked for three to five years you should have plans to continue your education with graduate school. Many big companies will pay for your graduate education completely provided you work for them for a certain period of time. This is the ideal way to increase your experience, your worth long term and have your graduate school paid for. It's extremely important to attend the best school you can get into at the MBA level. This will have direct impact on the salary level you will have the opportunity to acquire. If your company will finance it, Harvard, Brown, the best schools should be a goal to achieve. This will truly give you a plethora of opportunities not as readily available at lesser known schools.
The variety of industries and corporations that will hire graduates with MBA's is terrific and will most certainly have "your" niche somewhere. You must decide where your strengths are and what kind of work you would excel most in and then pursue it with passion. This is the best recipe for success.
