club or pet retailer for more information on training. Observe a class in session, and don't be afraid to ask for references or before and after photos. Most trainers offer a free initial consultation to discuss your dog's individual needs.

NUTRITION: Sometimes, nutrition can play a role in a dog's energy level. Dogs who consume low quality dog food packed with fillers as a main ingredient source instead of protein will experience higher energy levels than dogs on a premium diet. Talk to your veterinarian for more information on proper canine nutrition. While dog food nutrition plays a vital role in energy levels, the dog's feeding schedule should also be taken into consideration. Dogs should be fed at the same time everyday, even on your days off! Dogs are creatures of habit, and will soon recognize a solid routine, which will assert you as his "pack leader", making training go much smoother.

GREETING: Most energetic dogs have their biggest behavior problems when their owners return home from work. It is very important that you do not greet your dog right away. After a few minutes, calmly approach the dog and talk in a monotone voice. Baby talk and high-pitch voices will just encourage your dog's enthusiasm. Remember, the same rules should apply to all members of the family, and visitors. Consistency is key.
URINATION: Some breeds are notoriously known for urinating when excited. This is called submissive urination, and it is not considered a potty training issue. Greet the dog as mentioned above. Most dogs will usually outgrow submissive urination around two years old. Caring for an energetic dog can be hard work, the experiences are rewarding. Sometimes, keeping a journal of your dog' accomplishments and weaknesses will help you see in what areas you need to spend more time training. Just remember, nothing happens overnight. Patience is key while training any dog.
