Short stories: The waiter

by Vinny Knowles

Created on: November 13, 2008

He had only taken the job because he needed the money. Waiting tables was not anything a shy guy like Tim would have ever chosen if he had a choice. But, he didn't have a choice. College books were expensive and he needed that Calculus book ASAP. He needed a job within walking distance of the dorm, and this was all he could find. He had been borrowing Jim's book, but Jim was getting weary of sharing. So, here he was at Mama Mias, the Italian joint where all the college kids hung out.

He had his note cards for a history exam in his pocket and anytime he had a break, he would flip them out and study them. There weren't many breaks tonight though. It had been busy since he got there at 3:00. It was now 7:00 and he had two more hours to make his six hours. Six hours each afternoon after school. It was a lot of time to put in with your studies, but the pay was enough to take care of his books and snacks. His parents were helping with the tuition that his scholarship had not paid, but they couldn't afford to dish out any more. He wouldn't ask. He had been taught to work hard.

The door jingled as a group of college students entered. They were loud and boisterous. He felt like running to hide, but he had to face up. It was his job. "May I take your order?" he asked as he approached the table and pulled the order pad from his back pocket and the pencil from behind his ear.

He recognized one of the guys from the softball team. There were two girls in the group of about five guys. They looked much younger. He didn't remember seeing them around campus, but it was a big state school, so that didn't mean anything.

He took their order and then went to place it at the counter. Wiping down tables, he could overhear their conversation. "So, Sarah, that's your name right?" the ball player asked.

"Sure is, want my phone number?" She flirted.

"We'll see about that later," he winked "Who do you have for Algebra II?"

She blushed a bit and giggled as she looked at her friend. Her friend seemed a bit more reserved about the whole scene. "Douglas" she responded.

"Ohhh, Douglas, I've heard he gives tons of work outside of class. How do you have time to hang out here?" He asked.

"I make time to be with friends. That is an important part of college, don't you think?" She asked with a smile.

"I think so, but then again, I don't have Douglas for Algebra II either. You might think differently after your first test." He teased.

She could tell that she wasn't getting as much attention as she wanted from
