The goalkeeper is perhaps the most valuable player in any soccer team. Sometimes they are unheralded, for they do not score the goals, but ultimately they can stop the other team from doing so. There are a few attributes that make for a good keeper.
A keeper's handling ability is most important. That is to say, how well they handle the ball, that they catch it and do not drop it. Let us say that they can catch a ball well that is falling down from a cross into the box, and pick it out of the air. Alternatively, that a ball is shot low and rolling towards the goal, a low catch will be required.
Reflexes are another important consideration. When a ball is heading for the goal at good speed, they need to jump and block it fairly quickly. Also consider penalty saves where reflexes can play a part. So this, undeniably, is important.
Agility refers to how far and quickly they can jump. An especially agile goalkeeper will be able to jump and cover most, if not all areas, of the goal to prevent the ball from rolling in. As such, it is important.
Overall positioning in the goal is also one of the most important aspects. Let us say that a player sets up for a free kick on goal, a badly positioned keeper will leave a bigger gap in their goal. General positioning, for set pieces in and around the goal and in open play can make a big difference. The best goal keepers position themselves well, in and around their own box.
That keepers remain focused in a game can be important, especially in games where they are not so busy. If a ball suddenly comes their way, they need to be ready for it, and ensure that they do not let it trickle by the wayside into the back of the net. Ultimately, good anticipation.
At any rate, footwork should also not be underestimated. Certainly they will not kick a ball as much as outfield players, but for goal kicks keepers need to be able to kick the ball a good distance and towards one of there own players if possible. Likewise, they might be required to dribble the ball a little also. Saves can also be made with the feet as well as hands.
So ultimately, excellent handling, reflexes, agility, good positioning and useful footwork are something that a decent goalkeeper should offer. For any team a good goalkeeper will be a great asset to and possibly save them in certain games, with excellent saves and clean sheets (no goals conceded).
