How to help an aggressive rescue dog

inappropriately- this mimics the bite of another dog and redirects him from the aggressive state of mind.

Correct placement of a normal collar or nylon leash loop is effective as any other tool. Place the collar high up on the neck- directly behind the ears- to maintain maximum control of the dog. This keeps him focused straight ahead for the walk. Avoid using a harness because this does not apply control to the most receptive area- the neck.

If a dog panics and fights when you attach a leash, prepare for an exhausting battle of strength. Hold the leash and keep him at arm's length away while he flips and spits. Do not give in to him. Do not feel bad for him because allowing this process to complete is a giant leap in his recovery. Ultimately, he will tire out from releasing so much energy. Once he tires, place one hand on his neck (where he is unable to reach with his mouth) and your other hand at his rear to roll him onto his side. Keep your hand on his neck- not too forcefully- until he relaxes. Most importantly, remain calm and do not project aggression toward him. This process establishes your dominance and forces him into submission.

The minimum daily walk amount is thirty minutes, but strive for much longer. The more you walk the more energy he releases. Release of energy promotes relaxation and minimizes aggression. If you must, use a muzzle to ensure the safety of other people and animals. Place a treat inside of the muzzle so he willingly places his nose into it. However, muzzles aggravate the aggression of some dogs, so only use them if helpful.

- Stop Aggression-

Once your dominance is established- do not allow any form of aggression. If the dog growls and bites over his food dish (alone or with other dogs), use your body to announce that you own the food, not him. Stand between him and the bowl. If he tries to move around you, move with him and remain in front of him until he backs down. Only allow him to eat with your permission. When you assume all power within a healthy environment, this eases the dog, as he is no longer feels the need to control the situation.

Pay close attention to the dog's body language and stop his aggression within the initial moment. Cesar Millan, or "The Dog Whisperer", does this by mimicking a bite to the neck with his hand. Bend your fingers into a clawing position and quickly press into the side of the dog's neck. This is a swift, fast movement to redirect his attention from the object of aggression. You can add a disapproving
