Why don't more people give blood?

The Question; "Why don't more people give blood?" There are many reasons why more people don't give blood. But, I would have to say the number one reason would be "lack of convenience". Sounds pretty terrible when you stop to think about that reason, doesn't it?

But it's really true when you think about it! The majority of people are caring, are compassionate, and will go out of their way, within reason, to help someone else (even a stranger). However, the assistance they are willing to give, has to be "convenient" for them to give. In this particular case, giving blood; that would mean knowing where to go, when to go, how to go, how long would they be there, and is it safe? They have to know about the blood drive so they can plan, and make arrangements to go.

The agencies, and the organizations (hospitals, clinics, military), don't get the word out "soon enough" nor "often enough" to make it "convenient" for the majority of people to make plans and arrangements to donate their blood. Think about it, how often have you heard about a blood drive in the last (30) days, (60) days, (90) days? I bet you haven't heard about one! If you did, where was it (the other side of town)?

Let's be realistic, by the time we all hear about a blood drive, the blood supply is almost gone! Unfortunately, the only good thing about "that", is that the agencies, and the organizations involved, out of necessity, get "the word out over and over again". In addition, they have "many collection points" at "different times". Gee, sounds like "it's convenient"! Can you guess the result? You're right, people show up!

Some of the other reasons "why more people don't give blood" are; they have health issues (sick), they have been sexually active and "may be infected", they may have given blood too recently to give again, their religious beliefs may prevent them from giving or getting blood, they may be afraid. Some people are just deathly afraid of even the thought of giving blood. Some people faint at the sight of blood.

When you're at the "collection point", obviously you are asked a whole bunch of questions that are extremely private in nature. Some people just feel uncomfortable when those questions are asked, and refuse to answer. If you refuse, you have to leave without giving blood. The answering of questions, the testing of your blood is necessary to protect everyone, and to protect the blood supply.

Donating blood is a "wonderful, wonderful experience" and an "unbelievably rewarding experience" because you are "literally" giving the "gift of life"! Be a "hero", donate! Who knows, the life you save may just wound up being your own! Have a great day!
