Is a cosmetology license the right choice for me?

Thinking about getting your license in Cosmetology? Ask yourself the following questions:

1) Am I a sociable person?

2) Am I the kind of person who does better learning hands on?

3) Am I into instant gratification?

4) Do I have a habit of giving everyone I know "mini makeovers" whether asked to or not?

If you said "yes" to all of these questions, then Cosmetology might be the right career for you!

Why is this career a good choice for a sociable person? Think about it. Appearance is a very personal decision and takes a special trust with someone who not only understands the nature of beauty, but how to assist in making their client appear to their best advantage. It takes good communication skills and the ability to build a business relationship with your customers so that they will come back to you time and again. This kind of personality trait is learned on a customer service kind of job, such as in retail. If you can handle the social aspects of retail, you can handle the social aspects of Cosmetology.

Do I learn better hands on? Some students are just better at learning how to do a job by hands on training instead of getting all their learning from a textbook. Whether you decide to specialize in hair only, or become a makeup artist, the potential to create and learn is never the same experience, which is a nice perk for a person who gets bored easily. Cosmetology coursework often means less than a year of school and passing a state exam. If you decide to expand your skills from hair into makeup, the training basics tend to be short term classes. No muss no fuss.

Can I get a kick out of instant results? Cosmetology is one of the few careers where you get to see instant results when you finish a work assignment. The opportunity to show your work with each customer that goes out into the world wearing your design has the potential to bring you more business by word of mouth (and by showing off what you did to make them look that good).

How many times have I been told I should get paid for making them look good? Maybe you are the kind of person who has been doing aspects of this kind of work already but for free. If you have a natural way with color and shape, and like the idea of being creative with live models, cosmetology may be for you.
