How to avoid putting on weight during the holiday season

The holiday season usually leaves behind more than just dried pine needles and candle wax. Those of us who struggle daily with weight issues usually throw in the towel during these joyous times due to the fact it seems pointless to even try with all of the home-baked goodies and "feeders" around. You know the people who act offended if you don't at least try the coconut cake made from their secret family recipe!

So, how do you get through the holidays without looking like Santa? Pick your fights wisely. Be honest and accept the fact that peanut butter fudge or Mamma's sweet potatoes, smothered in brown sugar and marshmallow cream (Yes, I'm from the south!) is your weakness and treat yourself to a reasonable helping, usually about half of what you would normally eat! Take your time and enjoy every bite; bask in the experience.

As far as the family feast goes, dip small portions of the high-carb items, or better yet, leave them off all together. Pile high the vegetables and salads, as long as they don't have rich dressings pre-applied. Usually, an appetizer tray of fresh vegetables is left nearly untouched, yours for the taking; just ignore the vegetable dip in the center. Turkey is a safe bet. It doesn't necessarily have to be accompanied by dressing; it's not a law or anything. OK, just a tablespoon! Avoid the eggnog and drink water, tea, or coffee sweetened with a sugar substitute, if you must have it sweet.

One way to guarantee low-carb, low-fat, and low-sugar items are readily available at the dinner table is to bring them yourself. Other family members and friends trying to watch calories and those with diabetes will be very appreciative. You can do this for the office parties as well. There are wonderful cookbooks available full of easy, delicious recipes for dishes such as these. In fact, you could become another "feeder" in the family, but no one will have to invent clever reasons not to try your wares!

Once the meal is over, immediately clean up the kitchen and put away leftovers. This will keep nibbling at bay. Challenge everyone to a game of football or some other activity that will keep you off of the couch where you know a nap is waiting. If no one else is up for a game get your camera ready for some blackmail material as everyone else falls asleep with their mouths hanging open!
