at the trail above me, and stepping slowly onto rocks embedded in the path that were unavoidable, fighting the fatique that was threatening to settle into my bones.
As if I was not having a hard enough time, the girls pointed out a plant that I was to avoid, as it would cause my skin to burn. What?! So, as my legs were burning, I had limited use of my arms to try and not touch the common plant that was potentially lethal to my being. I was scared to death. On and on we trudged, higher and higher, while a dense fog settled around us, impairing our sight. The bottoms of my Victoria's Secret sweatpants were caked with mud, and seeping with water from the trail that seemed to be part stream. I thought for sure I would die before I reached the top. By the time the trail opened up to a very wide mountain top I was nearly too tired to enjoy it. But, after resting for a few moments and drinking some bottled water, I was able to witness the incredible, amazing view. There before me was the island of Kodiak in all of it's beautiful glory, littered with ocean views, mountains, and healthy green plants abound. It was the greatest thing I have ever witnessed.
I conquered the 'old woman'! I did it, and I lived to tell about it, and I even have pictures to proove it. It was one of the best bonding experiences that my sister and I may boast. The hike back down the trail was not nearly as difficult, but I certainly was glad to see the end of it! I collapsed into the seat of my sister's SUV and closed my eyes in relief. It was then that she informed me that my eight year old nephew shared my enthusiasm for that very hike; Cory vowed "never again". That solidified the idea that my nephew and I are in sync. I left Alaska with many adventures beneath my belt, and I am proud to say that "conquering the old woman" was at the top of that list.
