Ferrets are not a pet for everyone. Ferrets, however cute they are, need attention and affection. Ferrets need at least one hour out with you/your family. Although ferrets sleep for up to 18 hours per day, they need to socialize. Ferrets are basically like taking care of a curious child that just learned to walk. Ferrets are always getting into things, making you upset by digging up your house plants, and making you laugh at their cute antics.
Before purchasing a ferret, certain things must be taken into consideration. Dogs that have natural hunting instincts, a hound for instance, will see this small carnivore as game. If you live in certain states, you cannot have a ferret (California) or if you are moving to a state such as Michigan, you must make sure you have the correct paper work and shots for your newfound friend. Other considerations that should be taken into account are vet bills. Owning a ferret means that they need to be kept updated on their shots.
Ferrets going to the vet is also important as they can develop adrenal diseases where they lose their fur, or other health issues. These ferrets are called special needs ferrets. If a special needs ferret is not something your lifestyle can afford, you may want to reconsider getting a ferret. A major issue with people who cannot afford a special needs ferret or were not educated enough to understand some of the health issues that go along with ferrets, end up homeless. Ferrets cannot survive the wild. Ferrets are purely domesticated animals. Unwanted ferrets end up at ferret shelters and animal societies. These ferrets may be older in age and their fur may not seem the best at first, but once you get the ferret home, get it on a healthy diet, they should spunk right up, and the little one will give you all the love it can.
Ferrets are not rodents, they do not have buck teeth. Ferrets are also not omnivores like humans. Ferrets are strictly o. Giving ferrets fruit treats is only okay if you make sure they eat it when given, and do not give these treats frequently. Ferrets are hoarders. This means if you do not want this cute little rascal taking and hiding your valuables (keys and slippers included) do not place them anywhere he/she can reach. A ferret lives approximately 6-8 years. These cute little fuzzballs weigh around 4 lbs. if they are male and 2 lbs. for the females. Various colors and patterns are also available, and some breeders have figured out how to get the long-haired trait to dominate, although these are harder to find.
Ferrets are amazing pets. These smart animals can be walked like a dog, although they get more side-tracked at times, and can be litter trained like a cat. Ferrets are great for houses and apartments. This pet is great for families or single people who need a companion. Just make sure that before you bring your ferret home that you ferret proof. Ferret proofing is making sure they cannot squeeze their bodies somewhere that will get them killed or hurt, making sure they cannot get into pills, and making a safe, clean, and fun environment for the little fuzzball to thrive in. If you take the time to make sure your ferret is happy, it will make you happy in return.
