Tips on cutting wedding costs

The most exciting, and sometimes daunting tasks a couple can do together, is to plan a wedding on a limited budget. Building the wedding of your dreams on a budget IS possible, but necessary steps must be taken to maximize your dollars.

The first step is to do an analysis of the basic numbers and get a clear figure in your heads before you start anything. Once that number is determined, you can begin the planning.

Make an outline of the necessities - the "must have" list - and don't worry about putting it in any particular order at first. Just brainstorm a list of things you think are mandatory in the final equation. Go back over your list and prioritize it by numbering the items in red pen. By streamlining your list, it will be easier to focus on your priorities.

Now it's time to move on to cost estimates from your "must have" list. You will quickly have an idea of what things cost, and this will permit you to sit down together again to (calmly) modify your more realistic "must have" list. Remember that this process should require a give and take for it to be fair. As your focus is more clearly defined, you will be able to determine where your monies will go.

If you fall a bit short of achieving exactly what you had hoped for because of budgetary constraints, it is okay to ask for help from friends and loved ones. If you really want to dance but can't afford that live band you wanted, consider letting your best friend's brother spin his awesome record collection. If you have a crew of friends willing to help, ask them to organize a barbecue for your wedding dinner in lieu of wedding gifts. No doubt your Great Aunt Lucy would be thrilled if you asked her to make your wedding cake. Consider the skills and talents of those you know, and don't be afraid to ask for help! You will likely find that your loved ones will be honored to contribute to your celebration because it feels good to be included and invested in its outcome.

Your careful planning together, done early and orderly, and including the ones you love in meaningful ways, will go a long way to realizing your perfect day.
