Places to visit in Australia

by Tim So

Are you planning to travel to the East Coast of Australia but are not sure what places to visit - and what to do there? In the following I am going to list the absolute highlights of the east coast.

1. The Great Barrier Reef. A must see for all those coming to Australia. Accessible either from Port Douglas or Cairns. If your health permits scuba diving, go scuba diving. Don't stick with only snorkeling as you will only see 5% of what you would have seen going scuba diving.

2. Whitsunday Islands. These tropical islands are another absolute highlight on an Australia tour. Stay and relax on one of the resorts on one of the islands (e.g. Long Island). However, make sure to join a sailing trip to Whitehaven Beach. Try to spend as much time as you can on Whitehaven Beach as it will possibly be the most beautiful beach you will see in your entire life. Also make sure to hike around that beach as there is a lot more to see from different spots.

3. Fraser Island. Don't leave out the largest sand based island in the world. This tropical paradise can only be explored by 4WD. Don't make the mistake of remaining around the resort areas as the island has so much more to offer. Be sure to swim in Lake Mackenzie, one of the many clear fresh water lakes, and explore the dense rainforrest all over the island.

4. Gold Coast. Enjoy the spectacular rainforest and waterfalls at Springbrook National Park where the famous movie 'Lost World' was filmed. Walk behind water falls and explore the dense forest that includes the oldest living tree on the planet. Near the ocean side, go on a whale watching tour or do one of the many fun activities offered from surfing to jet boating.

5. Sydney. Checking out the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. Do the great but pricy bridge climb on Harbour Bridge as the view from up there is the best around. Pay a visit to the classy Victoria Mall downtown and spend an afternoon shopping. Also make sure to pass by Darling Harbour and Bondi Beach, some of Sydney's greatest places. If you do have time and love hiking, make an excursion to the Blue Mountains 2h away and witness the scenic views offered by this great national park.
