which interferes with the absorption of nutrients.)
Why is Vitamin D so important? Vitamin D is actually a group of fat-soluble prohormones (a precursor to a hormone) and is an essential vitamin the body needs to regulate the amount of calcium and phosphorus in the body. It is best known for its role in using calcium to help build bones and keep them strong, but it regulates and affects nearly all of our organs, and a deficiency can cause muscle aches, weakness, and bone pain in people of all ages. It is related to osteoporosis, heart disease and strike, cancer, diabetes, parathyroid problems, adrenal gland burnout, immune function, psoriasis, insomnia, depression and even obesity. A very high number of menopausal women are found deficient in vitamin D.
When an individual is found to be deficient in vitamin D, the usual course of action is a prescription of 50,000 IU of vitamin D once per week for six to eight weeks, followed by a daily supplement of 800 to 1,000 IU is recommended thereafter. A blood test is done to confirm the deficiency. Most people notice improvement within a few days after taking the first dose.
There are, of course, risks to any excessive vitamin supplement. Always talk with your doctor and pharmacist about all the herbs, supplements, and medicines you are taking, and contraindications.
