Boston is the most fantastic place for a family break; the city has a great mix of history, architecture and a multitude of kid friendly attractions to keep kids and adults occupied regardless of season.

Freedom trail

No trip to Boston is complete without walking the freedom trail. This free activity can be completed and enjoyed by even the smallest members of the family. Set the kids a challenge to follow the red bricks through the city on a distance to suit and try and intersperse a little American history throughout (available on the wall of all significant sights). www.thefreedomtrail.org

Guided tour of the city by bus

If little legs restrict travelling distances, try a city trolley bus tour. Offered by numerous companies, they offer convenient stopping points and informative commentary, with free travel for kids under three. Kids will love riding on the trolley bus (open sided when weather allows), calling at all the great attractions; it's a great way to see the city.www.trolleytours.com

Duck tours

Are your kids clamoring for a trip on a bus or a boat; if you want to please everyone try a DUCK tour! The fun begins as soon as you board your "DUCK," an authentic World War II amphibious landing vehicle, renovated for sightseeing. A road tour of the city culminates in "Splashdown" as your DUCK splashes right into the Charles River for a breathtaking view of the Boston and Cambridge skylines. A real fun trip of approx 80 minutes long, with toddler and child rates available.www.bostonducktours.com

New England Aquarium

From whales to turtles and clown fish to dolphins and penguins, the New England Aquarium located in Boston is a real family treat. Offering viewing opportunities of rare species together with hands on experiences, this global leader in ocean exploration and marine conservation is one of the premier visitor attractions in Boston. With kids under 3 free and those under 11 paying a reduced rate, this is a great affordable kid friendly attraction. www.neaq.org

Boston Public garden

Have you a toddler or young child who loves to read? Get hold of a copy of Make Way for Ducklings' on your arrival in the city; written by Robert McCloskey, the book tells the story of a pair of mallard ducks who decide to raise their family on an island in the lagoon in Boston Public Gardens. Having read the book, visit the Boston Public gardens and explore the park. Somewhere amongst the grounds, Mrs. Mallard and her eight ducklings can still be found (cast in bronze) making their way to the pond to meet Mr. Mallard!

Boston is just waiting to be discovered by families. In addition to the fantastic attractions, lodging and eateries are plentiful, catering for families without question.
