Commentary: Why WWE championship belts mean less today than in the past

The WWE Championship, is the most prestigious title in the history of professional wrestling. Wait, that doesn't seem right. The World Heavyweight Championship is the most...still not right. The ECW Championship...oh please.

Let's face it championships in the WWE just aren't what they used to be. Several reasons exist as to why. Some of the blame lies with the WWE and some lies with pro wrestling/sports entertainment/entertainment fans.

One of the main reasons for the decline is sheer numbers. There are more major main event titles in the company then there are midcard titles. How does that make any sense? Yes I understand that there are three different brands, (so maybe there shouldn't be wink wink) but belief can only be suspended so far. Three top titles really dilute the effect of having a champion.

Another thing is the title reigns lately have been relatively short and uneventful. Since the WWE brought back the ECW title in June of 2006, there have been 20 different champions spanning the three main event titles. That is twenty champions for three titles over a two year span. The ECW title has had ten different holders over this span, which averages to about two months per reign. The World Heavyweight title has had eight or three months per reign. Lastly, the WWE title has had five or four months per reign. While some may disagree, length of reign has some effect on how much that reign meant or even how much that title currently means. Though the average reign times for the World and WWE titles seem like they have nice length, it is a little decieving. The ECW title has had eleven reigns an average of still about two a month. The World title has had 13 reigns or a little less than two months per reign. The WWE title has had 7 reigns or about three months per reign.

Championships used to be the prize and the culmination of hard work. Within recent memory the times that the major titles have been won or lost without a decision in a match. The WWE title was awarded to Randy Orton in October of 2007. The World title was vacated in December of 2004 due to a tie in a match. The World title was vacated in April of 2008. The WWE writing staff scripted a way for CM Punk to lose the World title without participating in a match in September of 2008. The ECW title was given to RVD in June of 2006. Bobby Lashley vacated the ECW title in June of 2007.

And that is just the top titles.

With approximately seventy male singles wrestlers on the current roster and about twenty
