Reclaiming the holidays begins with going back to the basics. Why the basics? Because the basics help you to remember why you celebrate in the first place. The holidays should be for family time, enjoying company and being grateful for the good things that have happened in the year. Gift giving has it's place, but should not send you to the poorhouse to prove that you can give a great gift. Reclaiming the holidays doesn't have to be the challenge that you think it would be, if you remember these important tips.
Remember the "why" in the season. Why are you celebrating the season. Is it family, friends or to prove a point?
The holidays create a great time to spend time with those that we love. Do you live a distance from your family and/or friends? The holidays provide a great opportunity to catch up, create new memories and enjoy. Wth cellphones, the internet and greeting cards, there is no reason to not touch base at the holidays. Life is short, the economy is bad etc., so why not use your holiday time to create something positive. Something lifelong. Something you and your family and friends will cherish for years to come.
Survive the seasonal madness by planning ahead. Planning ahead eliminates some of the stress of the holidays. It's less likely that you will feel like you're doing everything all at once if you create a checklist and tackle your tasks one by one. This is an excellent way to accomplish your holiday goals and you won't feel like you're being stretched in 50 different directions. For example, are you only going to have enough time to visit one set of friends and/or family? Keep that in mind as you're planning. You may not be able to see everyone, but seeing someone close is better than seeing no one. If travel for the holidays is not possible, try inviting family, friends or relatives. There may be someone who has no one to visit for the holidays and time spent with you and your family may be the best gift to give.
Start planning your holiday early and keep your expectations in check. You know you better than anyone else, so set your goals and celebrate the holidays in ways that are truly meaningful to you and your family.
Celebrate traditions. Traditions are an important part of the holiday season. If you have a tradition that you follow, include the people or person that is visiting with you. If you are traveling, try to incorporate it into your holiday travels.
By mentally preparing yourself for the holidays and having realistic expectations about the holidays, it will be easier to make the most of the holiday season and even enjoy it!
