Yoga has come to be an increasingly popular practice in the West, as many look toward Eastern alternative health practices as a path to well-being. With the fast-paced, stressful lives that many of us lead, yoga is a simple, wholesome practice that truly encourages us to "stop and smell the roses", appreciate our bodies, and just enjoy being.
The word yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated. It is a discipline of exercises that promotes union and balance between mind, body, and spirit.
Yoga is a low-impact exercise. It does not discriminate against age or ability one can modify poses to best meet personal needs. Yoga is also noncompetitive in spirit. Never focus on the abilities of those around you; instead, concentrate your intentions on committing yourself to the pose. When you learn to concentrate and focus on the union of your being, you will see amazing transformations in your practice and in your overall self-awareness.
Yoga is not only a spiritual practice, but it is also a physical one. As you practice, you will begin to notice changes in your stamina, balance, level of energy, and overall health. Yoga also helps to increase your flexibility, lubricate your muscles, tendons, and ligaments, and massage the organs. Yoga's comprehensive focus on all facets of well-being mind, body, and spiritis what makes it such a beneficial and enjoyable activity.
Asana and pranayama are two important focuses of yoga practice. Asana is the practice of posture, while pranayama is the practice of breathing. There are several forms of yoga, with some of the most well-known styles being Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga/Power, Iyengar, Kundalini, and Bikram/Hot.
Hatha is one of the most popular styles. Movements are slower-paced and gentle. Hatha is a great introduction for beginners, as it helps one become familiarized with asanas and pranayama.
When considering your first yoga class, think about what you wish to gain from your practice, and choose a style that best fits your needs. With yoga's increased popularity, classes are easier to find. Contact your local recreation department or fitness club for opportunities in your neighborhood. There are also many books and DVD's that are helpful in introducing you to the practice. To learn more about yoga, poses, and classes available in your state, visit www.yogajournal.com
Most importantly, don't be intimidated. Just try! You'll be amazed at what yoga can do for you.
