Looking to do something different in your holiday gift-giving this year? Perhaps in years past, after the frenzy of last-minute shopping was over and all of the colorful paper and ribbons were cleared away, you found yourself left with a feeling of disappointment, a vague notion that something was lacking. Your heart may be moved to reach out and do something more meaningful, something that might serve to preserve, heal, or uplift the world and its inhabitants.
This year, instead of buying one more necktie or pair of gloves for that friend or family member who already has everything, consider making a donation to a charity in their honor. The recipient will receive a card in recognition of the gift, and both giver and recipient will have the satisfaction of knowing that something far more significant than the usual ripping of wrapping paper has taken place.
Here is a short list of charitable organizations that are making a world of difference:
Seva Foundation- Founded in 1978, this non-profit has three main projects. The Sight Program performs affordable cataract surgery in developing countries. Over 3 million people world-wide have regained their vision through this remarkable program. The Community Self Development Program aids indigenous groups in Guatemala and Mexico, and the Native American Program focuses on bringing health care to the Native population in the U.S.
World Wildlife Fund- Founded in 1961, the mission of this group is to preserve habitat, natural resources, and diversity of wild animals. This is an excellent choice if you have children on your gift list. By making a contribution, you can symbolically "adopt" an endangered species, and the child receives a plush animal representing that species. It comes along with an adoption certificate, explaining that you have helped to protect that animal and its habitat.
Save the Children- Founded in 1932, this charity works to improve children's lives in the U.S. and more than 50 countries around the world, providing economic opportunities, education, healthcare, and relief from hunger and malnutrition.
Rainforest Alliance- Founded in 1987, this group focuses on preserving rainforest ecosystems and biodiversity, while assisting the people who depend on the land for their livelihoods. They promote agriculture, forestry and business practices that ensure sustainability.
If you are unsure whether a charitable organization is reputable, you can look it up on Charity Navigator. This website evaluates thousands of charities and rates them according to how effective they are, and how efficiently they put contributions to use. You can also search for a charitable organization by type or location. The charities listed above all received 4 stars, Charity Navigator's highest rating.
