Hunted
Jesse ran as fast as she could, knowing her life depended on it. Jesse's lungs burned in her chest and her legs could barely keep her going, she tripped over rocks, twigs and her knees buckled as she fell into small holes along the path through the woods. Her heart pounding loudly as she came to the end of the path where she faced a stone wall, there was no way over it. In the not so far distance she could hear them closing in on her. As panic overwhelmed her she opened her mouth to scream but no sound came out.
Suddenly she awoke with a start, her body covered in sweat even though the air was chilly. Jesse could feel her heart still racing from fear as she tried to focus her eyes and searched out the shadows in her room. Her mind realizing it was just another bad dream, they have been happening more frequently in the last few weeks. Calming herself down she could now feel the chill in the air, she pulled the old scratchy wool blankets up around her now cold body. She did find a rusty old fork that she wrapped in a rag and stuck it in her pocket; it could serve as a weapon if she needed it to. Suddenly she thought she heard the hum of some sort of engine in the far distance. "Oh no" she said to herself and ran upstairs to look out the windows on the top floor. In the distance she could see jeeps and tanks, they were moving fast in her direction.
Jesse grabbed her duffle bag and ran out careful not to be seen in case they had binoculars looking in her direction. This is close she thought, to close for comfort she told herself as she dodged behind bushes trying to make her get away. She made it to an old overgrown field, where she stayed as low as possible trying not to disrupt the
