Boosting your immunity naturally

The purpose of the body's immune system is to defend against disease and infections and help to repair already affected areas. The stronger your immune system response is, the healthier you are. We need a consistent and balanced intake of vitamins and minerals to keep our immune systems functioning efficiently.

When seeking to strengthen the body's immune system the usual approach taken by most doctors is to prescribe expensive drugs that often include needless and potentially harmful "fillers." Instead we should choose to seek out the many natural substances that are available to us that can help our body to fight infection, stimulate immune response, increase cell regeneration and strengthen tissues and organs. Using natural immune boosters is often safer than treating with pharmaceuticals due to having far less side effects, as well as being more powerful.

Let's take a look at some of the best natural immune boosters available to us.

Echinacea:

Echinacea is known as a miracle herb for cold and flu prevention. It contains a natural antibiotic that can kill a broad range of viruses, fungi, and bacteria. Studies have shown that Echinacea extracts are proving valuable in increasing T-cell production. It is available in tincture, tablet and tea form. Echinacea tea has a very distinct taste that many love. However, if the flavour is too strong for you then try an Echinacea tea blend. Echinacea and Elderberry is especially delicious as it adds a complementary sweetness and tartness.

Sprouted Broccoli Seeds:

Sprouted broccoli seeds contain 30-50 times more absorbable levels of antioxidants than regular grocery store broccoli. However, regular broccoli is still extremely good for you and should not be overlooked. But if you are looking for a powerful immune booster than broccoli sprouts are the way to go. They contain high levels of sulforophane which is a powerful antioxidant that encourages long-lasting immune health. You can buy a sprouting kit or research online how to grow your own sprouts easily at home.

Pau d'arco:

Pau d'arco is an amazing herb that comes from the rain forests of South America. It nourishes the body's defence system and protects against pathogenic organisms. It has been used for hundreds of years to detoxify, improve immune function and reduce pain in the joints. It also contains an antibacterial agent, cleanses the blood, kills viruses and has an overall healing effect. If you are feeling under the weather for any reason then this is the tea for you. It is most commonly sold as a loose tea and its appearance resembles tree bark. It has a soft and sweet flavour.

Reishi and Shiitake Mushrooms:

These mushrooms are not only delicious in just about any food dish, they are a natural source of protein which stimulates the body's immune response. They contain lentinal, a compound that encourages our natural defences and works to lower toxins in the body. They are also a great source of the antioxidant germanium.

Garlic:

Garlic is a terrific bacterial and viral infection fighter. It is particularly effective in treating upper respiratory and viral infections due to its ability to aid in clearing mucous from the lungs and stimulating immune response.

Astralagus:

This herb is classified as a "superfood." It is a fantastic all around immune booster. It is not only effective in fighting off colds and flus but it also improves digestion, fights fatigue and helps with weight management.

Lastly, proper diet and exercise creates the foundation for a properly functioning immune system. Taking care of your body by providing proper nutrition and hygiene habits is always the first step to a healthier you.
