Go for green gifts this holiday

Living green is a goal that many aspire, but few reach. It begins with awareness and moves on from there. So let's look at some things during this holiday season that can spread awareness and help create more green living.

During tough economic times lots of gifts become practical, but that doesn't mean they can not be fun and green. How about giving someone a recycle bin for waste products and pay for six months service? Fill the bin with green cleaners and wrap it up in a sheet set! There is not one thing in your little gift basket that can not be used and it may teach some one else about becoming more green.

Many enjoy the gift of music and many musicians donate part of their sales to "green living". So get them that great CD and tell them why you are supporting this musician and their music.

Treasure hunts are always a fun way of giving a gift. So why not go through the house late on the 24th and replace everything you can with something wrapped in green? The recipient goes on a treasure hunt to find all the new green things in the home. Purchase "green clothes" and put them in the closet wrapped in green. Give every gift you were going to get anyway a green touch.

How about a great book on how our purchases can help make the world a better place and how we can become a steward of a better environment?

Create a pass it on gift. We have done this for many years. It is a gift that you are going to re-gift, not because you don't want it, but because you want to share it. We did it with a journal about five years ago. It was labeled "Ideas for Better Living" and the instructions said to write your ideas and stories in the book and pass it on. There are now several journals and they continue to travel. The tile for your journal may be "How to Live a Little Greener".

Giving gifts should be good for the recipient as well as the donor. It should create happiness in every home it reaches.

Some one once told me that cards sent through the mail were a waste of time and money. I beg to differ. They can be used to create all sorts of new decorations, crafts and gifts of joy.

Thinking green begins with the little changes we make every day and grows into a happier, healthier environment. So this year, go a little green and don't be afraid to explain the gift to the recipient. They will be grateful you care about them and the world they live in.
