A country divided: Political tensions building in America

by John Nevola

You Did It! You Elected Barack Obama!

To America's young people:

Citizens in a Democracy deserve the government they elect so please allow me to preview what you asked for and what you will get.

It is fairly clear to the most casual and unbiased observer that Barack Obama will be a very Liberal President in the White House and he will have an unchecked Liberal congress to conspire with. His views and whatever published speeches, interviews and writings his campaign has not been able to suppress all speak to his proclivities. From his own mouth he has pronounced, "spread the wealth" and from his own interviews he champions "income and wealth redistribution" and the "redistributive responsibility of government". Fine, if CHANGE is what you wanted, here is what you will get.

Government will get bigger and taxes higher over time. There is no doubt about this. His promise of a middle class tax cut for some mythical 95% of working people will go the same way Clinton's unfulfilled promise of a middle class tax cut went; into the trash bin of history. Why? Not because he's a bad guy but rather he needs the revenue to support his programs. When he has sucked the top 5% dry, where do you think he will go for his trillion dollar programs?

If this does not resonate with you, why is Joe Biden saying it is patriotic to pay taxes? Who is this admonition aimed at? Is it only for the top 5% and make them feel better? Why are we rebuked that we are selfish if we don't enjoy paying taxes. Is this a warning to you and me? Draw your own conclusions but be ready to part with some of your hard-earned cash once you get a job and he gets into office.

We will become a nanny-state, paid for by an ever-decreasing pool of high-income wage earners that will bleed down into the middle class. In this Global Economy companies will bolt overseas where the corporate taxes are lower, taking jobs with them. Why stay here in the USA when the government will continue tax and bash you. Obama has already demonized Big Oil, Big Pharma, and Big Healthcare, big anything that creates jobs! Come on, do you really think that engaging in class warfare and insulting American capitalists and American business can be reconciled after he takes office? If I were running a big business I would head for the friendliest country I can find and re-incorporate there or I otherwise risk being taxed and regulated into oblivion by the "spread the wealth" crew. If I stayed in America, I surely would not grow too quickly and I certainly would not make too much "windfall" profits for fear of being castigated daily in the press for my success. It has to be clear that those who achieve will become the targets of government for both ridicule as well as financial relief for those who do not achieve.

Insofar as Big Labor is concerned, once they get more power they will turn the United States into the same rust-belt remains they left the auto industry in. Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania will be repeated all over the country. It is no coincidence that areas with companies with strong Unions are suffering badly and more open, less unionized regions of the country, like Florida, are prospering.

Obama wants to rebuild the economy from the bottom up. News flash! Jobs are created by the top (small business and corporations) and jobs are needed by the bottom. You cannot rebuild an economy without new jobs and the bottom does not create them. Call it cruel, call it unfair call it what you will but no one receiving a tax credit or a welfare check ever created a job. You cannot rebuild an economy by handing out other people's money!

Individual motivation to excel and achieve the American dream will surely evaporate. Mediocrity will become the norm. Welfare will re-emerge. The borders will be thrown open. The Congress will deficit spend to fund all of these "benefits" and the dollar will eventually become extremely weak and continue to lose value.

People will be told they will have to do with less - that the next generation may not be better off than the last generation - (as Carter once told all of us but we rejected that bit a negative outlook and re-birthed our American dream under Ronald Reagan). To fund this nanny-state where the government takes care of all your needs, entitlements will eventually have to be scaled back and the military budget will have to be slashed. And the government will eventually decide what an acceptable standard of living needs to be for all classes of Americans..

Gas will be probably be rationed and new laws will force energy conservation and regulate the size of your cars until we long for the days when we could sleep in our own air-conditioned rooms at home. Industries will be nationalized and it starts with healthcare. You will wait for 6 months for an x-ray, mammogram, CT scan or surgery like they do in Canada today.

It still won't be enough to satisfy the voracious appetite of those with their hands out - which will be nearly everyone by that time. And by driving away the entrepreneurs and achievers, there won't be all that many left to support those who believe it is the role of government to take care of them!

Without a strong military to back up the dollar, it will continue to devalue and China will eventually cash in its IOUs at a critical time and bankrupt us. Which won't much matter because by then we will have signed up for a number of UN Treaties and become "citizens of the world" and forever give up our freedom to hold our elected officials accountable to us as individuals. We will never be able to hold the UN accountable for their corruption, misdeeds and desire to see America fall into mediocrity like most of the rest of the world. The UN will never have the best interests of America in mind so give them the power over you at your own hazard.

The Supreme Courts will go hard left. Say goodbye to God and consider that someday you will be able to marry your dog if you so choose. We will become a mediocre, defenseless, socialist, lazy and pathetic country. It will make the Great Depression look like a Sunday picnic. No government run economy has ever succeeded in the history of mankind. No communist state has ever been successful nor have any of them had happy, productive, generous and thriving people.

Individual accountability, the opportunity to excel and achieve great things with a limited government is what made America great. It has worked for over 200 years. We can correct the flaws in our great system of government with minor surgery but it seems we are choosing to throw out the baby with the bath water.

This election is so clearly a turning point that we all know what we will be getting for electing Obama. This is not just about Republican vs. Democrat. I would vote for a Democrat in a heartbeat if he promised to preserve the promise of America for future generations. And that is a simple promise; get an education or skill, work hard, play by the rules and your government will level the playing field for you, make sure you are treated fairly, protect you from foreign enemies so you can aspire and achieve what you have earned. There should be no boundaries to constrain you and no laws to discourage you to go live the American dream like so many have before you! That is the promise of America and why so many people flock to our shores!

President Bush as failed us in a number of ways. No doubt about that but it makes no sense for all you young people to punish yourselves and your children for the mistakes of one President. This election was not about punishment for a man who or a party in power when the economic cycle turned ugly. Both parties deserve blame. Neither should be rewarded. This elections should have been more about the future direction of this nation than who to blame for past failures.

Let's be fair about this. You young guys are not called the "me generation" for no reason. Instant gratification has not been attributed to most of you on a baseless whim. The facts show that you all spend way more than you save and have been doing so for a long time. Your credit ratings are not that great and half of you pick the wrong spouse the first time around. Most of you have never voted before and a lot of you are not familiar with the policy issues of the day. I'm not being judgmental, it's just who you are.

But someone yells out Change and Hope and you got hooked? It appears that "free lunch" and a government safety net is very appealing to you. Take a minute and try to understand exactly what is going to change and who is going to benefit. There is no such thing as a free lunch. Take a minute to understand the price you are likely to pay. I hope you will realize by electing Obama, you were still looking out for yourselves and not future generations. His presidency will result in the government spending more than it can afford and you are going to reduce this country to the military and social equivalent of Sweden. I was brought up to believe we are better than that.

This election was about one of two choices; It was about either individual opportunity and individual freedom or giving in to a government who says they know better than you what is good for you. It was about personal accountability and seizing limitless opportunities or having a government who promises to take care of everyone. The thought of surrendering to that philosophy makes me physically ill. But if this is what you want, young America, good luck with it. I hope it works out for you. And for your children and grandchildren.

You just gave up the freest, fairest, most dynamic and most accountable government that ever existed on the face of the earth. You just traded in your personal liberty and limitless opportunity to let a strong central government spread the wealth and try to take care of all your needs. And once you surrender that liberty, you'll never get it back. If you don't believe me, just ask the Athenians and the Romans. I thank God that I will not be around much longer on this earth to lament what you just so selfishly and so easily squandered.
