For so many of us, the holidays can be an especially busy and stressful time of year. On top of an already hectic schedule, there is decorating to be done, cards to send, gifts to buy, parties to give or attend, and traveling. Trying to get it all done can sometimes leaving us wishing that it was already January. However, with a little planning and some realistic expectations, we can once again turn the holidays into the joyous occasion it should be.
First it is important to set some priorities. Trying to do everything at once can cause undue stress which can damper enthusiasm. If you are planning on traveling and not being home during the holiday season, then perhaps it is not necessary to do a lot of decorating. If on the other hand, you are planning a party then the opposite would be true. It is important to start planning on what is most important to your family and then leave the rest for later.
Next some organized shopping would be helpful. Finding gifts for everyone can often be a frustrating experience while trying to shop from one place to another in crowded stores. Two things which can help is purchasing gift cards and shopping online. Gift cards are easy to buy and the recipient will always get what they want and shopping online can be a simple point and click operation with the store handling the wrapping and shipping.
Cooking and entertaining is a big part of the holiday season. If you are planning on having an elaborate party, then be sure to get some help from family or friends. If you are on your own, then keep it simple. Everyone will still have a good time even if they are eating off paper plates.
If you are traveling, then be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get where you are going. Often times the roads maybe icy or the airlines experiencing delays. An extra day can make a huge difference.
Finally, be flexible and remember that everything does not have to be perfect. It is important to note that the holidays are a time of sharing with family and friends; not a Broadway production. So by keepings things simple and realistic you will find that this holiday season can be one of your best ever.
